Fall 2018 Art Show
Artist Statement
For the 2018 Winter Art Show, I was inspired by an Instagram post showing a certain style of carving, which is shown on my pink cups. I love texture and thick pottery, so I combined these elements for my show. My goal for the functionality of these pink cups was to fill them with jewelry and other miscellaneous things. First I threw regular cups and carved large indentations into the rim once they had reached the leather-hard stage. This completely changed its shape and created a rigid texture. I wanted the emphasis of my ceramic pieces to be a pattern of texture on the surface, and I tried to pick glazes to make my carvings stand out.
Despite this being my second year of ceramics, I had never applied underglaze to carvings, so I carved vertical lines through wax around the rim of a bowl and two mugs. My goal for these pieces was to make them functional for the kitchen. I created variation in the length of lines and rhythm by spacing them evenly apart. I put blue underglaze on the unwaxed lines, then bique-fired the pieces to burn away the wax. After this, I glazed the pot with clear on the outside and pink on the inside. This pink glaze is my cohesive element for this art show. I am very proud of my work this year, and hope it will be enjoyed at the show.
